Aniseed Flavouring

Aniseed or Anise is a sweet & aromatic spice with a liquorice flavour which derives its flavour from an organic compound similar to estragole – which is also found in both tarragon & basil. It is one of the most widely used spices globally and has applications in all manner of foods, whether sweet or savoury. It’s highly aromatic property also provides a great aroma to any recipe.

With it’s origins in the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia, it’s prolific in their cuisine but is also popular in the rest of the world thanks to it’s versatility as a flavour additive. The seeds are harvested from a herbaceous annual plant and can be used in the preparation of almost any foodstuffs whether whole or ground into a powder.

The Flavour Smiths Aniseed Flavouring is a potent and authentic food flavouring which has seen extensive use in kitchens, labs and industrial food sites for it’s value and strength of flavour.

Aniseed flavouring is different to Star Anise flavouring with the key difference being strength. Star Anise is much stronger in nature so it’s counterpart flavouring should also be stronger, if it’s designed to be accurate and authentic. Read more about the difference between the two here.

Instructions For Use

The Flavour Smiths Aniseed Flavouring is very strong, and in most cases you will only need to use it in drops rather than in millilitres. We typically recommend starting with a dosage rate of around 0.15% & working your way up until you find a suitable strength, for example: 1kg of product will require 1.5g of flavouring in order to provide a good amount of Aniseed aroma without overpowering the whole recipe. Some trial & error may be required to produce a level of flavour suitable to your needs.

The PET plastic bottles we use for our artificial flavourings feature a thin dispensing nozzle which doesn’t let liquid out unless the bottle is squeezed. This allows careful and precise control over your dosing.

Since our flavourings are liquid – they blend much more thoroughly when first added to another wet ingredient such as milk, water or egg.

Note: when baking & cooking you may need to increase the dose as the flavourings may “flash” out of the ingredients when subjected to high temperatures. Cooking & baking small batches to test just how much you will need to increase the dose will give you a good starting point.
